The Lost Grape of Bordeaux

Carménère originated in France’s Bordeaux region, where it was prized for its bold flavors and deep color. However, the devastating phylloxera epidemic of the mid-19th century wiped out vineyards across Europe, and Carménère was believed to have been lost forever.

Fast forward to 1994, when French ampelographer Jean-Michel Boursiquot made a groundbreaking discovery in Chile. What had been thought to be Merlot vines in Chilean vineyards were, in fact, Carménère. Thanks to Chile’s phylloxera-free soils and Mediterranean climate, the grape had not only survived but flourished.
